Frances Tiafoe and Hailey Baptiste create tennis history together at the Miami Open

Frances Tiafoe and Hailey Baptiste are flying high at the Miami Open, with both players into the quarterfinals.

The Miami Open has witnessed many big shocks so far, including the high-profile exit of ATP number one Carlos Alcaraz.

On the WTA Tour, six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek also fell early, but Tiafoe and Baptiste remain in contention for the respective titles.

And their impressive runs have helped create tennis history, although they certainly won’t want their time at the tournament to end now.

Playing on home soil, the runs of Tiafoe and Baptiste have ensured that it is the very first time that two DC players have reached the quarterfinals of a 1000 event.

It has been a memorable tournament for the former, who both defeated the defending champion and completed a major milestone in the same moment.

He knocked out 2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik in the third round, which represented his 250th career win.

Either side of his win against the Czech rising star, he knocked out French duo Arthur Cazaux and Terence Atmane.

It’s been a similarly impressive run from his compatriot Baptiste, who has beaten top 10 player Elina Svitolina and former Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko.

The American has also beaten Tatjana Maria and Liudmila Samsonova at the Miami Open, where she has yet to drop a set.

Can an American win the Miami Open?

Of course, as Tiafoe and Baptiste will be well aware, a quarterfinal spot at such a tough tournament will inevitably lead to world-class opponents.

And both are set to find that out the hard way after being drawn against the highest-ranked players remaining.

Tiafoe takes on Jannik Sinner and Baptiste meets Aryna Sabalenka, the second and top seeds in Miami respectively.

The American representation certainly doesn’t end there, with Tommy Paul taking on Arthur Fils at the quarterfinal stage too.

Meanwhile Jessica Pegula plays against Elena Rybakina, while Coco Gauff is already into the semifinals, where she takes on Karolina Muchova.

John Isner represents the last American men’s Miami Open winner, lifting the trophy in 2018, while Danielle Collins did so much more recently in 2024.
