Former Vol John-Patrick Smith competed in the US Open on Tuesday in Flushing, New York. He and doubles partner Fernando Romboli faced No. 11 seed Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram in the third round.
Mektic and Ram defeated Smith and Romboli, 6-7, 7-5, 7-5, on Court 5.
The duo advances to the quarterfinals against No. 14 seed Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus on Wednesday. The quarterfinal match will be televised by ESPN.
Smith played tennis at Tennessee from 2007-11, compiling a 152-44 singles and 146-38 doubles record. He became the second player in the history of college tennis to earn All-America honors four times in both singles and doubles, joining Rick Leach of USC (1984-87).
Smith’s highest ranking was No. 1 in singles and doubles competition. He earned SEC Player of the Year honors from 2010-11 and was named 2010 SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player. The former Vol was also the 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year and 2011 SEC Athlete of the Year.
