A little over a year ago, Robert Cash and J.J. Tracy were playing college tennis for the Ohio State University. They lifted the men’s doubles trophy at the NCAA Championships, marking themselves as the best college team in the country. Both graduated in May and have moved on to their professional careers. And now, they’re making waves at the US Open.
Cash and Tracey are no strangers to avid followers of tennis. While NCAA champions don’t always have success on the professional tours, these former Buckeyes have instantly made names for themselves. The pair won four titles on the ATP Challenger Tour (the second-highest professional level) earlier this year, and just picked up their first ATP Tour title–in Los Cabos, Mexico in July.
Last year, Cash and Tracy earned a wild card berth into the US Open. They won one match before bowing out in the second round. Now, though, they’ve won three matches–and are showing no signs of slowing down. They’ve already taken out two seeded pairs–No.7 seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the second round, and No. 10 seeds Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in the third.
In the quarterfinals, Cash and Tracy will face the 15th seeds, the French pair of Fabien Reboul and Sadio Doumbia. The match will take place on Court 17 at about 4 PM Eastern (after the previous match ends) and can be streamed on ESPN+.
A third former Buckeye, Matej Vocel, is also in the quarterfinals. He is partnering with Tomas Machac, who won the Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles at the Paris Olympics. Vocel played one season at Ohio State after transferring from Oklahoma State. That year (2021-22), he partnered with Cash, and the pair reached the NCAA doubles final.
