Three weeks ago, during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, 11-year-old James Borchard was stunned when he opened his iPad and found a congratulatory Instagram shoutout from American pro Taylor Fritz after Borchard had been accepted to play in the prestigious 12-and-under IMG Future Stars event to be held next month in Athens, Greece.
On Thursday, Borchard secured a gold ball in Indian Wells, winning the boys’ 12s singles as the top seed at the 57th annual FILA Easter Bowl.
“I was a little nervous at the start of the match,” Borchard said. “I took my time and was patient and so happy I pulled through. The Easter Bowl is one of my favorite tournaments.”
The 6-2, 6-1 win over unseeded Jugmin Lee is another huge feat for the 11-year-old from Thousand Oaks at what some call the Super Bowl of junior tennis.
The Easter Bowl continues through Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with finals in the girls’ and boys’ 16s and 18s upcoming.
In the girls’ 12s final on Thursday, top-seeded Lucy Dupere of Wake Forest, North Carolina beat Cross Kareena, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Daniela de Mastero, a native of the Minneapolis suburb of Maple Grove, defeated third-seeded Allison Wang, 7-6(2), 6-4, in the 14s final.
“We play indoors from November to April, if we’re lucky,” de Mastero said. “This is my first tournament playing outdoors, and the first few matches were tough to get used to just because I’m so used to indoors.”
In the boys’ 14s final, eighth-seeded Arjun Krishnan, a San Jose native, beat top-seeded Rafael Pawar, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Krishnan now has his sights set on the boys’ 16s Nationals at Kalamazoo, Michigan.
“I’m going to try and qualify at Kalamazoo,” Krishan said. “Kalamazoo becomes my priority from now on.”
