Everything you need to know for the girls KSHSAA State Tennis Championships

The postseason is underway for fall sports in Kansas. The first state championship begins this weekend when the best tennis players in the state take to the court. Shawnee County is well represented for the final tournament of the season.

Check out the full list of Topeka-area tennis players qualified for the state tournament here. Here is a look at the Topeka-area storylines, plus the schedule and locations:

Seaman poised for strong Class 5A showing

Seaman tennis will be staying close to home and participating in the Class 5A State Championship at Kossover Tennis Center.

The Vikings qualified their entire team as Emma Sweeney and Molly Gorman are set for big weekends. Sweeney is the team’s No. 1 singles player with her 27-1 record. The junior has won the United Kansas Conference, the Topeka City Championship and the Regional Championship this year.

Seaman's Candace Speer, left, celebrates a point with doubles partner Kaylynn Heibsch, left, during the KSHSAA Class 5A Regional Championships at Kossover Tennis Complex on Oct. 11, 2025.

Sweeney’s lone loss came against Andover’s Mia Jaramillo. The two could meet late in the Class 5A bracket. Along with Sweeney, Gorman has been great, too. The senior is committed to play at Fort Hays State and she has a record of 24-6. Gorman also won the city title in the No. 2 singles division.

Seaman will have two teams in the doubles competition, too. Camryn Lux and Peyton Henry secured third in the regional tournament. Cadence Speer and Kaylyn Hiebsch finished in fourth place.

Last season, Seaman earned third place in the team standings. It was the school’s first podium finish and they have a chance to go even higher this weekend.

Hayden ready to defend state title

Hayden qualified their entire team for the Class 4A State Tournament. The Wildcats are the defending state champions after winning last year’s title. Hayden has won two of the last three state titles, their only two in program history.

Hayden's Grace Funk during the Topeka City Tennis Championship at Kossover Tennis Center on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024.

They have another strong team that can defend the title, led by singles players Lana Hull and Grace Funk. Hull, a freshman, was the team’s No. 1 player with a 23-9 record. Funk, a senior, also put together a strong season with a 20-10 record. Both players faced off in the regional championship consolation finals.

The Wildcats qualified their two doubles teams, too. Sophia Wichman and Avery O’Bray will team up while Kaelyn Gerdel and Kinsey Bullock will play together.

Silver Lake represented in Class 3-1A

It’s one of the few times in school history that Silver Lake will be represented at the state tournament. Evelynn Thompson has played with Hayden this season on a co-op basis. Playing in the regional tournament, she rolled through qualifying as she took second place.

Thompson upset the No. 2 seed in the regional semifinals for a big win. The sophomore has a 12-5 record this season.
