No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic is headed to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the eighth time in a row after he came back to defeat No. 11 Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.

Djokovic, who secured his 100th career Wimbledon win on Saturday, will face No. 22 Flavio Cobolli of Italy on Wednesday as he seeks his eighth title at the historic Grand Slam major.

The Serbian’s win over de Minaur came in front of his longtime rival Roger Federer at Centere Court. Fans were buzzing on social media after Djokovic acknowledged the Swiss legend in his on-court interview after the win.

“It was a very difficult encounter, a lot of challenging moments for me,” Djokovic said of his four-set comeback win.

“Sometimes I wish I had a serve and volley and a nice touch from the gentleman that is standing right there,” he said, pointing at Federer and generating a roar from the crowd at the All England Club. “That would help.”

“Such a classy gesture from Novak to acknowledge Federer in the Royal Box,” replied a fan on X. “True respect between legends of the game.”

“Class,” echoed another response.

“Novak great,” a fan praised.

“It’s good to see the respect between players, always applauding this,” one user said.

If Djokovic were to win this year’s event, he would reach 104 career wins at Wimbledon, one shy of Federer’s men’s singles record of 105.

Federer currently holds the record for most men’s singles titles at Wimbledon in the Open era with eight, but he would have more if not for Djokovic, who beat him in the final in 2014, 2015 and 2019. Djokovic holds a 27-23 record against Federer all-time.
