Another strong season for Columbus Academy’s girls tennis team came to an end Oct. 18 with a runner-up finish in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II state tournament at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
The Vikings (18-3) placed second for the second time in three seasons, defeating defending champion Cincinnati Indian Hill 3-1 in a semifinal before losing to Pepper Pike Orange 3-0 in the final.
Academy was seeking its second state championship and first since 2008.
In the final, Academy’s Gabrielle Stewart lost to Genevieve Hayden 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, Iris Sun lost to Ivy Berlin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and the first-doubles team of Lara Wood and Sophie Wu lost to Raina Patel and Adele Tokmazeysky 6-2, 6-3.
Hayden won the OHSAA Division II singles title the previous day.
OTCA matches end as soon as one team wins three courts.
Against Indian Hill, Ella Tsao swept Elle Mikula 6-2, 6-0 at second singles, Wood and Wu beat Grace Nguyen and Grace Perry 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles and Zephyr Harrison and Ela Koksal defeated Genevieve Chasar and Reese Hazen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Stewart lost to Martha Thompson, this year’s singles state runner-up, 6-1, 6-0 at first singles.
Upper Arlington finishes third in Division I
UA rebounded from a 3-0 semifinal loss to Mason to defeat Perrysburg by the same score for third place.
Against Perrysburg, Alexa Roth beat Cambell Looser 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Kylie Husted shut out Lilith Dunn 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Zoe Lloyd defeated Savannah Boris 6-3, 6-3 at third singles.
UA (16-2) had been state runner-up each of the past two years and was seeking its first championship since 2013.
In the semifinal, Roth lost to 2024 state singles champion Addison Cassidy 6-0, 6-2, Husted fell to Emma Wagner 6-0, 6-0 and Carmen Kimmerl lost to Adriana Moreno 6-0, 6-0. Moreno was part of a Division I state title doubles team Oct. 17 with Saanvi Reddy.
Mason defeated Rocky River Magnificat 3-0 to win its ninth OTCA title in a row.
