Tennis fans were extremely concerned about Coco Gauffâs long term health after she was forced to retire from her March 8 match at Indian Wells against Alex Eala with an arm injury.
Gauff, who frequently communicates with fans on social media, explained that she felt like fireworks were going off in her left arm. She was planning a March 9 MRI.
Then, there was silence. No one from her team reported back about the MRI, and fans were bracing themselves for Gauffâs Miami Open withdrawal.

What Coco Gauff said
She finally shared what is going on with her arm, calling it âa nerve thing.â Gauff said her arm is feeling better each day.
She stated that the goal was always to play the Miami Open, considered her home tournament, but added, âI think if it wasnât Miami I would probably skip this tournament. But the fact that it is, I really wanted to play here.â
Gauff is not 100% healthy and does not rule out feeling remnants of that firework feeling when she plays her opening Miami Open match on Thursday, March 19.

It was her first MRI
Coco Gauff said that she never had an MRI before and did not particularly relish the coffin-like enclosed feeling of getting one. She is hoping not to need another one anytime soon.
Gauff turned 22 on March 13 and has been on the WTA Tour since 2018. She has stayed remarkably healthy. Prior to Indian Wells, she only retired midmatch one other time.
Watch Coco Gauff, the 2023 Miami Open doubles champion, and all the top WTA and ATP players at the Miami Open, airing on the Tennis Channel, through March 29.
