We are in the heart of ATP tennis season, and Carlos Alcaraz is the current World No. 1. Jannik Sinner won the Sunshine Double and could overtake Alcaraz in Monte Carlo.
Everyone knows the situation. The reality is that Alcaraz and Sinner have already passed the ranking back and forth between themselves several times.
Why then is it necessary to constantly ask Alcaraz and Sinner about ATP rankings mid tournament? Hopefully Carlos Alcaraz’s recent answer to the question ends the constant questioning.

What Alcaraz said
Alcaraz said what we all know to be true. He is going to lose the World No. 1 ranking at some point. It may be at Monte Carlo or later in clay season. Alcaraz has a lot of points to defend, and Sinner does not.
Certainly, the ranking is important to each player, but the primary focus is to be mentally and physically healthy, play well, and see what happens match by match and tournament by tournament.
The ranking is most significant at the end of the season. November is far in the future with a lot of tennis to be played between now and then.

Could someone else challenge Alcaraz and Sinner?
Anything is possible. Though Alcaraz and Sinner have won all the Grand Slams in the past two years, that could change. A new star could emerge to challenge both of them.

The more significant ranking issue for either player is falling to World No. 3. In that case, the player is either in the World No. 1 or World No. 2’s side of the draw which means he potentially has to play one of those players in the semifinal. Ask Alexander Zverev how difficult that path is.
In the meantime, let’s enjoy the level of tennis Alcaraz and Sinner are bringing in the prime of their respective careers. Watch both players at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters airing on Tennis Channel through April 12.
