Carlos Alcaraz avoided a slip-up in the Miami Open second round, coming through a tricky test against Joao Fonseca.

Fonseca took an early 3-0 lead in the opening set, but Alcaraz managed to turn things around and secure his place in the next round.

Alcaraz praised his opponent after the match, recognising how difficult it can be to play against someone so young who has nothing to lose.

“It was really difficult. Playing against him is a really tough one,” Alcaraz said. “I started playing well in the beginning, but he was up 3-0 really quickly.”

While Federer played more than 1,500 matches throughout his career and won more than 1,200 of them (something which is very unlikely to be beaten), Alcaraz has been on top form from a much younger age than Federer was – although not quite at the level of Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic during their early careers.

Alcaraz now has 89 wins at the Masters level after his straight-sets victory over Fonseca in Miami.

He holds an 89-25 record in ATP 1000 events, good for a win rate of 78.1%.

Only Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have a higher percentage among players with at least 20 matches played.

The Spaniard has now moved ahead of Federer, who ended his career with a win rate of 77.9% in ATP 1000 events.

With the Spaniard just 22 years old, there’s every chance he can surpass even Djokovic and Nadal as well before it’s all said and done.

The last time Alcaraz won an ATP Masters event was at the Cincinnati Open in August when he lifted the trophy after Jannik Sinner retired during the final.

Carlos Alcaraz picked up his 89th Masters-level win by beating Fonseca, adding another milestone to what’s already been an impressive early career.

He now holds an 89-25 record in ATP 1000 matches, good for a remarkable 78.1% win rate.

Among players with at least 20 Masters matches, only Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have posted better percentages.

Federer finished his career with a 77.9% win rate in Masters events, just below where Alcaraz sits now.

Given that Alcaraz is just 22 years old, there’s every reason to believe he could close the gap even further as his career goes on.

His most recent title at this level came at the Cincinnati Open in August when he was handed the trophy after Jannik Sinner retired from their final.
