Iga Swiatek has named Francisco Roig as her new coach following her split from Wim Fissette.
Fissette, who was with Swiatek for 17 months, helped guide her to a Wimbledon title during their time together. But after a challenging spell in the early part of the season, she’s now opted to bring in Raducanu’s former coach.
Roig is a respected figure in the sport, having spent 17 years as part of Rafael Nadal’s team and most recently coaching Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard.
Boris Becker thinks Iga Swiatek has made a ‘good choice’ in hiring Francisco Roig
Francisco Roig spent 17 years working alongside Rafael Nadal, playing a significant role in his rise to 22 Grand Slam titles.
Roig, who reached a career-high ranking of world number 60, was part of Nadal’s coaching setup from 2005 until 2022.
During that stretch, Nadal collected all but two of his major titles.
Boris Becker, who has three Wimbledon titles to his name, is clearly impressed by Roig and believes Swiatek made a smart move by bringing him on board.
“Love Rafa [Nadal], the best there ever was – certainly on clay!” Becker said in a post on X.
“Also respect Francisco Roig! I have met him many times and love talking tennis with him!
After her loss to Magda Linette at the Miami Open, Swiatek returned to the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca. A former student of the academy, she reportedly went back to Manacor to train on clay and start a trial period with Roig. That trial appears to have gone well, as the two are now set for an extended partnership.
Can Iga Swiatek win the French Open this year?
Iga Swiatek has not been in good form to begin 2024. The Polish player is yet to win a WTA title and has already suffered multiple early exits: including against Maria Sakkari in Qatar and Magda Linette in Miami.
But it would be foolish to doubt her on clay. Swiatek is a four-time French Open champion, and while she hasn’t looked at her best this year, bringing Roig into her team could give her the boost she needs to find that form again.
But even so, she’s still widely seen as the best clay-court player on Tour when she’s at her peak. If she gets back to that level, it will take something special from someone else to stop her in Paris.
