Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina: who has more to lose if defeated at Indian Wells

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will face the new World No. 2 Elena Rybakina, when the updated WTA tennis rankings come out on Monday, in the Indian Wells women’s singles final on Sunday, March 15.

Sabalenka has been the beacon of consistency reaching the semifinals or finals of every big tournament she has entered in the past couple of years.

Rybakina has surged since last fall when she ended the season as the 2025 WTA Finals champion. She has long been considered a rising star in the sport. Injuries and illnesses plagued her after winning the 2022 Wimbledon title.

Sabalenka or Rybakina: who needs the win more?

Aryna Sabalenka’s comments leading up to the final indicate that she believes she must win this final. Tennis fans would agree. She has lost at big moments since the beginning of last year and needs this win.

Sabalenka said that she will do everything in her power to win Indian Wells, a title she has not yet won in her illustrious career.

Her big win last year was the US Open. However, she lost the Australian Open final to Madison Keys, the French Open final to Coco Gauff, the Wimbledon semifinal to Amanda Anisimova, and the WTA Finals to Rybakina.

In 2026, Aryna Sabalenka lost the Australian Open final to Rybakina.

Rybakina has been practically unbeatable when her serve is on point. It is considered the best serve in women’s tennis, and her best shot. She won the 2023 Indian Wells title, defeating Sabalenka.

Their head-to-head record, ironically matches the head-to-head record of Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev who will play the men’s final, is 8-7 with Sabalenka having the edge.

Is the tide turning in women’s tennis?

It has been Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff who have won multiple Grand Slams since 2022. With Rybakina’s win in Australia in January, she joins the multiple Grand Slam club.

Women’s tennis has long been considered loaded with talent. Anyone was capable of winning a big title or match on any given day. Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, and Rybakina have emerged as the dominant four though Swiatek and Gauff have struggled since their wins at Wimbledon and the French Open last year.

It is not clear if anyone else can channel Madison Keys and grab a Grand Slam win this year. Mirra Andreeva, Amanda Anisimova, and Jessica Pegula are considered to be players knocking on the door but have not been able to get over the hump.
