Andre Agassi reveals huge secret about Boris Becker in viral interview

American tennis legend Andre Agassi shared in a recent viral interview how he ultimately figured out how to attack Boris Becker’s dominant serve.

Agassi explained that he was desperate to find a solution. After going 0-3 in the 1988 and 1989 seasons against Becker, he had no feel or insight into Becker’s serving tendencies.

Then, he studied tape and noticed a nuance in Becker’s body language that gave him more information than he ever expected.

What Agassi found

Agassi noticed that Becker moved his tongue around as he began his rocking service motion. If his tongue stayed in the middle of his mouth, it was a body serve or one intended to go down the T. If it stuck out to the side, Becker was planning a serve out wide.

It became such a telling signal for Agassi that he resisted the urge to use it all the time in matches and only acted on it in key points.

He did not want Becker to believe he was reading his serve 100% of the time and subsequently change this tic.

Agassi eventually told Becker

Though he did not specify when he told Becker, it seems reasonable to conclude it was after one or both of their playing careers ended.

Agassi was in Germany at Oktoberfest, and he spilled the beans to Becker over a pint.

Becker responded by confessing that he used to tell his wife that he thought Agassi could read his serve.

Why Becker felt that way

He had to be discouraged because after the 3-0 start against Agassi, he went 1-10 from 1990-1999. Becker lost eight matches in a row to Agassi before snapping the losing streak in the 1995 Wimbledon semifinal.

It was an amazing winning streak created by Agassi’s stealth study of his opponent. This is one of the reasons that Agassi is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

His intincts and feel for the game continue to inspire the next generation in his current role as Team World Captain at Laver Cup.
