Taylor Townsend has offered a heartfelt update to fans regarding her recent absence from the WTA Tour, breaking her silence in a quick Instagram video. Her last appearance was at the Miami Open, where she reached the doubles quarterfinals. Since then, questions had been mounting about her unexplained withdrawals—and now, we know why.

Townsend revealed that she suffered a mild concussion during her quarterfinal match in Miami. Despite taking two days off, she returned to play her semifinal, not yet realizing the seriousness of her condition.

“So in Miami I fell and ended up getting a mild concussion in my quarterfinal doubles match. This is my first time back on court in almost a month,” she said. “I was just really scared. I did a lot of testing, and it came back that I did have a concussion.”

While she initially hoped to recover in time for the Madrid Open, Townsend shared that her symptoms returned, including recurring headaches that forced her to step away from the sport entirely. “These last three or four days have been the first time I’ve had no headaches,” she noted, visibly relieved.

Known for her competitive spirit and professionalism, Townsend emphasized that she didn’t want to compete unless she was fully ready—physically and mentally. “If you know me, you know I’m not the kind of person or player who’s going to show up if I’m not prepared,” she said. “I really wanted to give myself the time to heal properly. I was really concerned about my head.”

Although she won’t be competing at the Rome Masters, Townsend confirmed her return is scheduled for Roland Garros, one of the most prestigious events on the calendar. “I’ll be front and center at Roland Garros,” she promised. “So, stay tuned for my comeback.”

Townsend’s openness and focus on health have been widely praised by fans and fellow players alike, and her return to the court will undoubtedly be a welcome one.
