Amanda Anisimova’s Parents Led Family’s Inspiring Journey From Russia to America originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Amanda Anisimova’s parents, Olga and Konstantin, took a chance moving from Moscow, Russia, to the United States in 1998. Now, Amanda is surrounded by her family in England as she competes in the Wimbledon final.

Looks like the gamble paid off for the Anisimova family.

Amanda’s mom and dad moved from Russia in hopes of providing more opportunities for her older sister Maria. The family also considered a move to Spain before deciding on the United States.

Amanda is from Freehold Township, N.J., taking a unique path to emerge as one of the top tennis players in the world. Unfortunately, Amanda’s dad tragically died of a heart attack in 2019, per The New York Times’ Scott Cacciola.

“We really like Spain, but then we recognized when we visited America that everybody who comes here is going to feel like home,” Konstantin told The New York Times’ Christopher Clarey during a May 2017, interview conducted years before his passing.

“In Europe, you always feel like a foreigner because it’s a completely different culture. America is a united country where people come from all over the world, and after a couple of years, they feel this is home, you know?”

Amanda never had a doubt when it came to deciding whether to represent the United States or Russia during her tennis career. Back in 2017, Amanda admitted to The New York Times that she did not consider representing Russia.

“I never considered representing Russia,” Amanda said at the time. “I do plan on going, though. I really want to visit and see what it’s like and see the culture more.”

Amanda’s family has been front and center during her exciting Wimbledon run. The tennis player’s nephew Jaxon has become a star while supporting Amanda at Wimbledon.

“The most special part of it all 🥹 getting to experience this with my nephew and some of family here, ahhhh I could cry !!” Amanda posted in an Instagram message on Wednesday.

As for Amanda’s mom and dad’s move to the United States decades ago, the decision started by coming to America to visit family.

“My wife had relatives who had lived a long time in the United States,” Konstantin told Clarey. “They sent us an invitation to come visit this country. We visited it, and we liked it more and more, and we start thinking and taking it seriously.”
