Alexander Zverev might be the player who’s felt the rise of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner more than anyone else.

He was seen as the clear favourite to follow the Big Four, expected to collect titles once they had stepped away from the game.

Yet even after Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal left tennis, Zverev’s Grand Slam record hasn’t improved, despite staying near the top of the rankings.

Still, his determination to stay in the mix for major honours hasn’t gone unnoticed. His recent win has now put him in some rare company alongside a few familiar names.

Following his win over Arthur Fils in the Indian Wells quarterfinals, the German set a new milestone for himself.

Zverev has now become just the fifth man to reach the semi-finals at all nine Masters 1000 events, joining Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on that list.

When asked about this achievement in his press conference, Zverev kept his response brief but was clearly proud.

“Yeah, it’s very special to be one of five players in history to ever do it. For sure, yeah, it’s something that I’m very proud of. Yeah, it’s a great thing to have in your career.”

Zverev had already made some adjustments before the season began and pointed out earlier this year when he realised he needed to change his game. So far those changes appear to be paying off.

Alexander Zverev faces a big chance to prove his new game against Jannik Sinner

Zverev’s win over Fils means he’ll face Jannik Sinner next, who has been in top form this season.

But the match is also a real opportunity for Zverev. The world number three can use it as a true test of the adjustments he’s made to his game over the past few months.

His move away from steady, passive play toward a more aggressive style was meant to help him challenge players like Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, and he held up well against Alcaraz during their Australian Open semi-final back in January.

A win here could show that the shift in approach was the right call. And while Sinner’s looked sharp at Indian Wells so far, he hasn’t been unbeatable in 2026.
