Alex Eala has shared her delight after meeting Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, having attended one of the team’s matches.

Eala is currently playing at the Miami Open, but enjoyed some downtime away from the court by taking in NBA action.

She has since switched her focus back to tennis, with the Filipina superstar having soared into the round of 16.

However, ahead of her meeting with Karolina Muchova, Eala expressed her joy at linking up with Spoelstra, a national hero in the Philippines, his mother’s homeland.

Alex Eala enjoys ‘amazing’ Erik Spoelstra meeting in Miami

Eala told Tennis Channel of their meeting: “It’s so amazing. Coach is such an icon and he’s achieved so much.

“Just to reconnect again after last year, it was a great time and to be able to watch another sport, it gives another perspective because basketball is so different from our sport.

“So yeah, I mean I was able to let loose a little bit.”

Eala also shared insight into their history, having been asked if Spoelstra was a fan of hers and if he had watched any of her matches.

She replied: “Yes, he did. He watched my match last year with Iga [Swiatek].

“I believe it was his first tennis match.

“So, I’m happy I was able to give him that experience of kind of the quiet of the tennis matches and that tension.

“It’s a big contrast from basketball. So it’s interesting.”

It was a stunning victory back then for Eala, who completed three successive wins over former Grand Slam champions.

At the 2025 Miami Open, the Filipina star truly introduced herself to the WTA Tour as she reached the semifinals, where she lost to home favorite Jessica Pegula.

Since then she has become one of the most popular players in tennis, and has already endeared herself to sports fans in the Philippines.

At this year’s Miami Open, Eala is now eyeing a spot in the quarterfinals, having previously beaten Laura Siegemund and Magda Linette.
