After Novak Djokovic US Open loss, this Grand Slam stat will make you feel so old

Like any sport, eras come and go, and legends retire or fade, ushering in a new age.

The men’s tennis world has been in a new era for a couple years now with Roger Federer retiring in 2022, Rafael Nadal retiring last year and Novak Djokovic, who lost in Friday’s U.S. Open semifinal, aging out of his dominance.

The 2025 men’s U.S. Open final on Sunday will feature 22-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, who beat 38-year-old Djokovic, and reigning champion Jannik Sinner, who topped Felix Auger-Aliassime in the other semi. Alcaraz and Sinner are on top of the tennis world, combing to win the last seven Grand Slams. That is until Sunday, when one of them will have one every tennis major across the last two seasons.

But Djokovic’s loss Friday marked the end of a decades-long streak in men’s tennis.

Not only is the 2025 season the first since 2017 where Djokovic failed to make a Grand Slam final, but it’s also the first year since 2002 that one of the Big Three — Federer, Nadal and Djokovic — haven’t been in a Grand Slam final, as the AFP noted.

That’s absolutely wild and will probably make you feel ancient. And just another sign a new era in men’s tennis has begun.
