Ignacio Buse has made history with his remarkable triumph at the Hamburg Open, earning widespread admiration from the tennis community. The Peruvian not only captivated fans with his performance but also impressed his fellow players, including Novak Djokovic, who showered him with praise after his victory over Tommy Paul in the final.
How Novak Djokovic and the Tennis World Reacted to Ignacio Buseâs Hamburg Victory
After battling through the qualifiers of the ATP 500 event in Hamburg, Buse pulled off a stunning 6-2, 7-5 upset over No. 4 seed Flavio Cobolli in the first round. The 22-year-old continued his stellar run by triumphing over Jakub MenĆĄĂk and Ugo Humbert to reach the semifinals, where he defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-1, 6-4.
Buse faced a tough challenge against No. 6 seed Tommy Paul in the final. However, he secured a 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3 victory in the closely contested encounter to clinch his maiden ATP title, becoming the first Peruvian to lift an ATP trophy since Luis Horna won the Chile Open in 2007.
Amid his preparations for the French Open, Djokovic took time to congratulate Buse on his breakthrough success in Hamburg.
âCongratulations Ignacio! The first of many,â Djokovic posted.
Despite losing to him at the tournament, MenĆĄĂk and Cobolli both sent congratulatory messages to Buse, while TomĂĄs MartĂn Etcheverry also showed his support.
âThats it! So happy for you man!â€ïžđ,â MenĆĄĂk commented.
âBravooooâŁïž,â Cobolli wrote.
âGrande amigo đ,â Etcheverry posted.
Speaking to ATPTour.com after his victory, Buse revealed how he plans to celebrate before heading to Paris for the French Open, where he will reunite with his mother after the milestone feat.
âNice dinner tonight with all my friends and family. Weâre going to be about 15-20 people at the dinner. But soon after the match, I went to the ice bath for recovery because I have to play at Roland Garros on Monday. But I will enjoy being with them for now for some pleasure. And I also want to see my mom, who is at Roland Garros waiting for me,â he said.
Ignacio Buse is set for a daunting test when he arrives at Roland Garros, as he will lock horns with No. 11 Andrey Rublev in his opening match. Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic will take on Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round. Djokovic and Buse feature in the same half of the draw and could potentially meet in the quarterfinals of the clay-court Major if the Peruvian puts together another fairytale run.
