Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula handed boost before playing their first WTA Finals match

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will help kickstart this year’s WTA Finals.

Playing on home soil at Indian Wells, the American pair will go against each other on day one of the year-end tournament. Gauff and Pegula will go head-to-head after the opening match between Linda Noskova and Marta Kostyuk.

Before any match, however, the WTA Finals has been hit with a major blow, with Elena Rybakina forced to withdraw because of illness. And while it is hugely unfortunate for the Kazakhstani star, it should be welcome news to both Gauff and Pegula.

Put simply, Gauff and Pegula have one less worry at Indian Wells this week. They were drawn in group one alongside Rybakina, but have now avoided their WTA rival altogether. Rybakina was not only the top seed and the defending champion at the tournament, but she also recently climbed to world number one for the first time in her career.

Also recently winning the US Open, she is clearly enjoying her tennis right now, and would definitely have been a big problem for the American pair. That has certainly been the case in the past, with Rybakina boasting a 2/1 win/loss record against Gauff, and a 6/3 record against Pegula.

Of course, there is no easy game at the year-end event, and Kostyuk still represents a big threat for both Americans. But she certainly doesn’t pose the same challenge that Rybakina does on the other side of the court. And the tables turn completely when it comes to their head-to-head records against the Ukrainian. Gauff is 4/2 against Kostyuk, and Pegula is 4/3.

Both Gauff and Pegula have a fine history at the WTA Finals, where they continue to fly the flag for American players. The former lifted the trophy at the tournament in 2024, a year after the latter lost the final to Iga Swiatek.

And very fittingly ahead of the all-American clash, Pegula and Gauff cannot be separated from their 10 career meetings, with five wins each. It represents one of the best current rivalries in tennis, with fans preparing themselves for a blockbuster encounter in Indian Wells on Sunday. On day two, Aryna Sabalenka meets Karolina Muchova, and Mirra Andreeva takes on Elina Svitolina.
