Jannik Sinner sends message to Darren Cahill as he confirms his departure, ‘this season didn’t end the way we wanted’

Jannik Sinner has officially confirmed that Darren Cahill has ended his tenure as his main coach.

Sinner is widely reported to be working with Magnus Norman, the Swedish coach who led Stan Wawrinka to three Grand Slam titles, from the start of the 2027 season as he returns from his knee injury.

This then led to the assumption that Cahill would be leaving Sinner’s team, as he was originally expected to do after the 2025 season before deciding to join him on tour for one more year.

Sinner had not commented on this until this point, as he has now sent a heartfelt message to Cahill to confirm his departure.

Sinner has been coached by Cahill since July 2022, with the Australian leading him to all five of his Grand Slam titles so far. Sinner thanked Cahill for all the success he has brought to his team, alongside Simone Vagnozzi in this time, in a heartfelt video message on his social media, as he also paid tribute to how he has helped shape him as a person.

“Darren, when we started working together in 2022, I was just a skinny young Italian guy with a lot of questions,” began Sinner. “You never gave me all the answers, you helped me find them myself.

“You came in as one of my coaches, pretty quickly you became a lot more than that. Someone I could trust, someone I could rely on, a friend. Melbourne, the first Slam, number one. Wimbledon, I could keep going.

“We’ve been through so much together, you told me you would stop after 2025 and somehow I still couldn’t get rid of you. But the trophies aren’t what I will remember the most, it’s everything around them. The long hours on the practice courts, the flights, the dinners, the love. Even the days when everything felt heavy, you were there for all of it.

“I always knew I was in good hands, not just me, everyone who travels with us, everyone behind the scenes. With you, we are more than a team. You have taught me a lot. That tennis is important, but it’s not everything, that being a good player starts with being a good person, and that complicated things can be simple.

“I hope I taught you something too, like how to hit a golf ball. I’m going to miss looking up after a big point and seeing you in my box. This season didn’t end the way we wanted, but that doesn’t change what we did or what these years mean to me. To your family, thank you for sharing Darren with us. I know what is asked of you and I don’t take it for granted, so much of what I am as a player and a person I owe to you. Five seasons, I won’t forget a single day of that. Thank you mate for everything, it’s been a privilege.”

Jannik Sinner’s career achievements with Darren Cahill as his coach

Sinner began working with Cahill for the 2022 grass court season, and in just their third tournament together, they won a title at the Croatia Open, where the Italian beat Carlos Alcaraz in their first ever ATP final against each other.

This was the first of 25 titles Sinner and Cahill have won together, which includes winning five Grand Slams. Cahill also helped Sinner to win 10 Masters 1000 titles, including becoming just the second and youngest player ever to complete the Career Masters after winning the Italian Open earlier this year.

All of these successes enabled Sinner to be world number one, which he achieved for 95 weeks before being dethroned as Alexander Zverev became world number one for the first time this week.

Having been on the sidelines with a knee injury for a number of months, Sinner and Cahill’s final ever match together came in the Wimbledon final, where he beat Zverev to claim his fifth Grand Slam title.

Sinner is yet to comment on his expected new coach Norman, but this announcement only further points that this is the direction the current world number two is heading in.
