Tennis fans took a swipe at the WTA after the organization admitted to a communication lapse that led to the controversy involving Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva.
During a practice session in Indian Wells, California, Pegula was caught on video making statements about Andreeva and Coco Gauff. Unaware she was being recorded, Pegula criticized the French Open champion’s on-court behavior, calling her a “diva” who needed to be “humbled.” She also accused Andreeva’s coach Conchita Martínez of encouraging the teenager’s behavior.
The incident caused a stir in the tennis world, prompting an apology from the WTA for failing to inform players and coaches that their practice sessions were being recorded.
“We sincerely apologize for failing to meet our responsibility to ensure players and coaches were properly informed,” the WTA said in a statement.
Fans called out the association afterwards, blaming the WTA for the lapse in judgement and putting players in jeopardy.
“No one hates women’s tennis more than the WTA. From the garish aesthetics of all the graphic design, to the non user friendly website, social media managers that don’t watch or know about women’s tennis and post about men’s golf competitions instead of WTA tournaments, nonexistent marketing & promotion, to now setting up their players to be vilified & dragged into discourse.”

Jessica Pegula set to compete in the WTA Finals for the fifth consecutive time
Jessica Pegula is set to compete in the WTA Finals, which will begin on Nov. 8 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, for the fifth straight year. She made her debut in the 2022 edition.
In 2023, the American reached the final, but lost to Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-0. The next year, Pegula pulled out during round-robin play due to a left knee injury. She followed that with a semifinal run in 2025, losing to Elena Rybakina.
Pegula has been drawn in the same group as Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Linda Noskova.
Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina, and Karolina Muchova make up the second group. Pegula will face Gauff in her first match on Sunday.
