Novak Djokovic will not play any more matches this year after losing to Rinky Hijikata at the Paris Masters.
Djokovic lost to Hijikata in the second round of the Paris Masters, officially ending his hopes of qualifying for this yearâs ATP Finals.
It also meant that Djokovic did not reach a Masters 1000 quarter-final for the first time in 21 years, having competed at Indian Wells, the Italian Open, the Shanghai Masters and the Paris Masters this year.
Djokovic lost 10 matches in 2026, with Hijikata being the final and lowest ranked to do so in the 2026 season.
Novak Djokovic has lost to 10 different players in 2026
Djokovic began his 2026 season at the Australian Open, where he stunned two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner to reach his first Grand Slam final since Wimbledon in 2024.
The 2023 US Open was Djokovicâs last Grand Slam title win, and he was within two sets of winning his 25th major in Melbourne after winning the first set of the final against Carlos Alcaraz. However, it was not to be for Djokovic, as Alcaraz fought back to inflict the first defeat on the Serbian this year.
Djokovic did not compete again until Indian Wells, where he reached the fourth round before losing in a thriller to Jack Draper, in what was one of the Britonâs only eight wins this year.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion then began his clay court season at the Italian Open, where Djokovic suffered a shock defeat to Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic. It was a disappointing clay court swing for Djokovic, who also suffered his earliest exit at Roland Garros for 17 years, as he was beaten by another young prospect in Joao Fonseca.
Djokovic then rediscovered some form at Wimbledon, where he reached the semi-finals for an eighth consecutive edition of the event before he was beaten by the aforementioned Sinner.
It was then a North American hard court swing to forget for Djokovic, as he failed to win a single match at either the Cincinnati Open or the US Open. Thiago Agustin Tirante beat the former world number one in Cincinnati, before Djokovic lost in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time in 20 years at the US Open.
This was followed by Djokovic winning the China Open after beating the likes of Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur to continue his flawless record in Beijing and claim his only title of the 2026 season.
Djokovic was then put in a strong position to qualify for the ATP Finals, which is a goal he set his sights on, but subsequently suffered early losses at the Shanghai Masters, Swiss Indoors and Paris Masters to Hubert Hurkacz, Jan-Lennard Struff and Hijikata, respectively, all players he had never been beaten by before.
