With his 2026 ATP Tour season hanging by a thread, Novak Djokovic produced an inspiring comeback victory to defeat Valentin Vacherot in three sets in the opening round of the Rolex Paris Masters.
The Serbian, who came into the tournament needing a deep run at the event to keep his season alive and boost his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals, found himself a set and a break down before turning back the clock to keep both his tournament and season going.
Novak Djokovic Produces Stunning Comeback
Serbian Overcomes Vacherot Despite Early Struggles
The match, played on the fastest indoor courts of the year, saw Vacherot look comfortable from the get-go, as the Monegasque fired six aces across his first two service games. Djokovic did well to keep the first set on serve, although Vacherot managed to generate three break points throughout the set, two of which were set points.
Some clutch play from Djokovic took the set to a tiebreak, where the Serbian initially managed to take the lead. However, with the set on his racket, Djokovic uncharacteristically made several unforced errors, handing the momentum back to Vacherot. The Monegasque then confidently closed out the tiebreak to take the opening set.

Still perhaps affected by what had transpired in the first set, Djokovic immediately fell a break behind at the start of the second, putting the match firmly in Vacherotâs hands. The Serbian then took a medical timeout due to a shoulder issue but continued playing after receiving some on-court treatment.
That treatment seemed to work immediately, as Djokovic broke Vacherotâs dangerous serve in the very next game to bring the second set back on serve. It was then Vacherotâs turn to seek medical attention, as the Monegasque called the physio onto the court midway through the second set for an apparent foot issue.
The crucial moment in the match came shortly afterwards, as Djokovic earned another break point to move ahead and get firmly back into the contest. Vacherot saved it and managed to keep the set on serve. However, in the ninth game of the second set, the Monegasque generated two break points himself, putting Djokovicâs hopes of staying in the match under serious threat.

The Serbian saved both of them, digging deep to stay alive. Both players would absorb further pressure on their serves, but just when it looked like the second set was also heading for a tiebreak, Djokovic once again produced a couple of clutch returns to break Vacherot and take the match into a deciding set.
From there, Djokovic made the most of his momentum, securing an early break in the third set. The outcome began to feel inevitable as the Serbian remained composed on serve while continuing to apply pressure on Vacherotâs delivery. He eventually completed arguably one of his best victories of the year.
Novak Djokovicâs 2026 Season
This year marks the first time since 2017 that Djokovicâs place in Turin has remained uncertain, as his age and physical issues appear to have finally caught up with him to a greater extent than before.
In total, Djokovic has played 30 ATP Tour matches so far this year, winning 21 of them for a well below career win rate of 70% this season. His gritty opening-round victory in Paris gives him another opportunity to improve that record.
The year as a whole has seen Djokovic struggle physically at various stages and suffer uncharacteristic defeats on the court. Early exits at two of the four Majors, along with opening-round losses at several other events, have made for an unusually difficult campaign as he now makes a late push to reach the ATP Finals in Turin.
The Last Word
At his age, however, Djokovicâs season should not be remembered for those low moments. Despite nearing 40 years of age, the Serbian has put together two separate tournament runs that will live long in the memory.

The first saw him defeat two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open to start the year, in arguably one of the matches of the season. Then, all the way in October, Djokovic clinched his 102nd career title, winning the Beijing Open after defeating three top-10 players in succession.
At this stage of his career, Djokovicâs time on court is about moments more than results. In 2026, he has already given us two memorable ones, with the Serbian hoping for more in Paris and, if all goes well, in Turin to close out the year.
