Alexander Zverev received heavy criticism from tennis fans after complaining about the hectic tennis schedule, with fans pointing out that Carlos Alcaraz had made similar remarks earlier.

During a press conference at the Vienna Open, the German tennis player criticized the ATP calendar and suggested reducing it by two or three weeks to give players more time to rest.

“I think the solution is relatively simple. I’ve said it several times: We should shorten the season by two or three weeks to give our bodies more time to rest and recover… In my opinion, unfortunately, things are moving in the wrong direction for us,” Zverev said.

However, his remarks did not sit well with fans, who compared them to Alcaraz’s previous comments at the Laver Cup.

The Spaniard said the ATP schedule is too demanding and leads to injuries. Zverev poked fun at him for feeling mentally and physically tired and pointed out the gap in their workloads.

“You had a four-month vacation. I have played 98 matches since you’ve gone,” Zverev said at a press conference.

Tennis fans aimed criticism at the two-time Grand Slam champion for issuing contradictory statements, with one of them writing:

“Carlos Alcaraz said the same thing, and Zverev mocked him for it.”

Another fan also highlighted the contrast in Zverev’s remarks and chimed in:

One of the fans slammed Zverev for not picking a side and wrote:

Here are a few more reactions:

“When he wins he says nothing, as soon as he loses he starts talking, he doesn’t have to play all the tournaments,” a fan wrote.

Another fan added: “But isn’t he the same guy who until yesterday was bragging about being in shape and that staying healthy was part of being a top player?”

Alexander Zverev makes his feelings known after securing the top spot on the ATP rankings

Alexander Zverev surpassed Jannik Sinner to become world number one for the first time, with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the Round of 16 at the Vienna Open. He became Germany’s second male World No. 1, following Boris Becker, who first reached the top spot in 1991. In an on-court ceremony after his win, Zverev said reaching the World No. 1 ranking is a special feeling. He said it feels different from winning a Grand Slam because seeing No. 1 next to his name makes him feel like he is at the top of the sport.

“It is very special. To have the feeling of being on top of the world is amazing,” Zverev said via Rediff. “It is different than winning a tournament or a title, but it’s such a special feeling to know that the No. 1 is going to be next to your name when the new rankings come out.”

The German player also reflected on the 2022 French Open when he came close to top ranking but suffered torn ankle ligaments and had to miss the rest of the season.

“I had to wait, but sometimes you’ve got to wait for the best things in life,” Zverev added. “So it is how it is. I’m super happy, super thrilled. This year, I mean, I have no words for this year. Again, I’m just thankful. I’m happy and all of the above.”

Zverev was eliminated by Alex de Minaur in the semifinal round of the 2026 Vienna Open.
