Venus Williams’ singles campaign at the Guangzhou Open has come to an end at the first hurdle.
Lilli Tagger, 28 years Williams’ junior, advanced to the second round after defeating the American tennis legend 6-2, 6-2 in the Chinese city.
The result represents the latest setback in what has been a disappointing year on the singles Tour for the 46-year-old.
While Venus has enjoyed success on the doubles tour, winning four matches across 2026, she has well and truly struggled to make her mark while playing singles.
Venus’ latest defeat should trigger a change in strategy across the WTA circuit next year.
Venus Williams should receive fewer singles wildcards in 2027
One must make clear that no disrespect is intended when writing this piece. Venus is a legend of the sport and one of the best role models any young aspiring tennis player could wish to have.
Venus has been a fantastic ambassador for the sport ever since she first competed professionally at the age of 14 in 1994, and her return to the WTA Tour last year was nothing short of a phenomenal occasion.
However, every story must come to an end.
Since defeating Peyton Stearns at the 2025 Washington Open, Venus has lost 16 consecutive singles matches on the WTA circuit after being granted wildcards by tournament organisers.
Simply put, those selecting wildcards for WTA Tour events need to be more varied in their decision-making for the 2027 season; Venus should receive significantly fewer wildcards than she did this year.
This argument is less about losing and more about the financial aspects of the matter.
Venus has collected a lot of money through wildcards throughout 2026, which is not at all an issue in itself.
However, with Venus taking so many wildcard spots, many lower-ranked players are not being granted the opportunity to earn significant prize money.
The disproportionate financial landscape of the professional tennis circuit has been well-documented, with those lower down the rankings often struggling to keep up with the monetary demands of competing on the Tour.
| Tournament | Opponent | Result |
| 2025 Washington Open | Peyton Stearns | won 6-3, 6-4 |
| 2025 Washington Open | Magdalena Frech | lost 2-6, 2-6 |
| 2025 Cincinnati Open | Jessica Bouzas Maneiro | lost 4-6, 4-6 |
| 2025 US Open | Karolina Muchova | lost 3-6, 6-2, 1-6 |
| 2026 ASB Classic | Magda Linette | lost 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 |
| 2026 Hobart International | Tatjana Maria | lost 4-6, 3-6 |
| 2026 Australian Open | Olga Danilova | lost 7-6, 3-6, 4-6 |
| 2026 ATX Open | Alja Tomljanovic | lost 4-6, 1-6 |
| 2026 Indian Wells | Diane Parry | lost 3-6, 7-6, 1-6 |
| 2026 Miami Open | Francesca Jones | lost 5-7, 5-7 |
| 2026 Madrid Open | Kaitlin Quevedo | lost 2-6, 4-6 |
| 2026 Bad Homburg Open | Irina-Camelia Begu | lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 |
| 2026 Washington Open | Anastasia Potapova | lost 3-6, 3-6 |
| 2026 Canadian Open | Kamilla Rakhimova | lost 4-6, 1-6 |
| 2026 Cincinnati Open | Emiliana Arango | lost 2-6, 2-6 |
| 2026 US Open | Sofia Kenin | lost 2-6, 6-7 |
| 2026 Guangzhou Open | Lilli Tagger | lost 2-6, 2-6 |
Therefore, following Venus’ evident struggles, WTA tournament organisers need to distribute wildcards in a more equitable manner next year.
