How can tennis players learn to make better tactical decisions on court? And how can we train game situations in a way that helps players recognize the right options, apply them effectively and eventually turn them into automatic patterns? These are some of the key questions addressed in our new video course “Tennis Tactics Training – Module Fundamentals”, now available on Tennis Training Online.

Almost 3 Hours of Modern Tennis Tactics Training

Together with Michael Kreuzer, I have created an extensive training module covering the fundamentals of modern tactical training in tennis. Michael is a DOSB graduate coach, DTB A-level coach and former head state coach for coach education and junior performance tennis at the Hessian Tennis Association. Throughout the module, he combines theoretical principles with their practical application on the tennis court.

Across almost three hours of video content, we follow one central principle: Tennis tactics should not simply be explained. Players need to learn how to read game situations, make decisions and apply the appropriate tactical solutions on court.

From Theory to Extensive On-Court Practice

The module begins with theoretical considerations on tactical training. Among other topics, we look at the geometry of the tennis court, tennis as a target game and the different parameters that influence ball flight and shot selection. The main focus, however, is the extensive practical section. Here, Michael demonstrates a wide range of drills, training methods and tactical situations directly on court.

Two junior players, Carl and David, take part in the practical sessions. Michael works through the tactical concepts with them in real training situations. This means you do not just see finished drills – you also experience the actual coaching process: How is a task introduced? Which solutions does the player find? When should the coach step in? And how can a conscious tactical decision gradually develop into an automated pattern?

Tennis Tactics Training Module Fundamentals

From Perception and Anticipation to Return Tactics

The module approaches tactical training from a wide range of perspectives. Topics include:

  • Geometry and different court positions
  • Perception and anticipation
  • Fast decision-making
  • Setting goals in tactical training
  • Offensive and defensive game situations
  • Passing shots and volleys
  • Successful point finishes
  • Tactical solutions under pressure
  • Tactical and methodical development of the drop shot
  • Serve & volley
  • Return tactics and return patterns
  • Explaining, training and automating tactical patterns
  • Numerous practical drills for tennis training

The connection between these different areas is particularly important to us. Tactical training should not be about giving players one rigid solution for every possible situation. Instead, players should learn to recognize situations, process the available information and independently choose an appropriate tactical response.

Practical Ideas for Your Own Tennis Training

The module is designed primarily for tennis coaches who want to develop a more systematic approach to tactical training and move beyond isolated stroke-based drills. At the same time, ambitious players can gain valuable insights into improving their own tactical awareness and decision-making. Many of the drills and training concepts demonstrated in the module can be transferred directly to your own sessions and adapted to different playing levels.

Combined with Michael’s detailed explanations, the live coaching situations provide a practical insight into how tactical concepts can be taught, developed and trained on court.

Michael Kreuzer & Martin Kares

With this new module, we continue our training series on Tennis Training Online. Michael brings decades of experience as a DOSB graduate coach, DTB A-level coach and former head state coach. I accompany the module from a coach’s perspective, asking questions and discussing the different approaches with Michael and how they can be applied in everyday training.

The result is almost three hours of in-depth knowledge on modern tennis tactics training – combining theory, methodological approaches, real game situations and numerous practical drills.
