John McEnroe’s brother has made a major prediction ahead of the US Open, supporting Ben Shelton. Patrick McEnroe believes that Shelton’s remarkable summer run, in addition to Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal, could create the perfect conditions for the reigning Canadian champion to make a deep run at the US Open.
The final Grand Slam of the year is here, and stars are already gearing up for the hard court major. The reigning Canadian champion Ben Shelton has found a strong supporter in John McEnroe’s brother Patrick McEnroe, who believes that the American has great prospects to become the first American champion in Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick.
In an interview with The New York Post, McEnroe said:
“I think I’m going to go with Ben Shelton now. … He’s had the best summer, winning Canada, he’s got the most upside I’ve been talking about of all the American men for a couple of years now.”
The former ATP pro also brought up the Carlos Alcaraz issue. McEnroe believes that the Spaniard has not had enough action since suffering his wrist injury in April, and that might make it difficult for him to sustain his game long enough in Flushing Meadows, which could amplify Shelton’s chances of winning:
“With Alcaraz being a little bit suspect, he could get upset, he could lose early, and I think Shelton has a decent game to match up with him. Clearly, if they played late in the tournament, that would mean that Alcaraz is feeling pretty good and would likely be the favorite if they do play, but I think if ever there were an opportunity for Big Ben to kind of put it all together, this would be the spot, this would be the place. “
Top-ranked Jannik Sinner broke the news last week, confirming that he will not be in New York because the knee injury he suffered post-Wimbledon is still refusing to heal.
John McEnroe’s Brother Explains Why Ben Shelton’s Game Can Hand Him a Grand Slam Win
John McEnroe’s brother Patrick McEnroe broke down Ben Shelton’s current abilities that he believes could ultimately help the American win his first Grand Slam.
During the same interview, McEnroe said that Shelton’s monstrous serve is his greatest gift, followed by a massive forehand, two key weapons that helped him win big in Montreal earlier this month.
“Monster serve, big forehand, has improved the return game, which desperately needs to be better to have a chance to win one of these big ones. “
McEnroe then pointed out Shelton’s mental edge:
“The other thing he’s got — what I call moxie. He’s got swagger, he loves the big stage, he wants to play against the biggest guys in the biggest moments, so that’s something you can’t teach.”
Despite an early exit from Cincinnati, it remains to be seen if Shelton can make a quick recovery and actually live up to McEnroe’s expectations of making a deep run at the US Open.
