The 2026 US Open is upon us. Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper, and Holger Rune are among the injured players unable to compete.
The American men are now 23 years removed from Andy Roddick lifting the 2003 US Open trophy. Every year, tennis fans wonder if this is the year everything changes for the US men.
2026 could be it, and there are several men in position to win it.

Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz won summer hardcourt titles
The favorites would be the champions of the key hardcourt tournaments leading into the US Open. Ben Shelton won the ATP 1000 Canadian Open for the second straight year. Taylor Fritz won the ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open.
The Cincinnati Open is still being contended. Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe will play in the semifinal on Saturday.
Brandon Nakashima has been the most consistent hardcourt player
Though Nakashima has not won a summer hardcourt title, he has been in the running in each one.
Nakashima has played the best of all the American men with new coach Wayne Ferreira recently taking the reins and implementing immediate strategies and improvements in Brandonâs game.
Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe earned big wins
Paul defeated top seed Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open.
Tiafoe, with a cyst removed from his hand during the summer months, enjoyed big wins over Lorenzo Musetti and fellow American Learner Tien. He will play Nakashima in the Cincinnati Open semifinals.
Frances Tiafoe, of United States, serves to Felix Auger-Aliassime, of Canada, at the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen are newest on the scene
Tien and Michelsen, the California natives and longtime friends, are the young Americans rising in the rankings. Their games are improving as they climb the rankings.
There are so many intangibles that have to go right for a Grand Slam champion to win the trophy. The draw, weather (heat or rain), schedule, and pressure need to be managed with precision and ease to assist in the winning effort. Nakashima is riding the best hardcourt winning streak and should be considered the favorite though any of these Americans can win the US Open this year.
