“Aryna Sabalenka Is Not Defending US Open Like This” – Fans Worried As Shock Canadian Open Exit Extends World No. 1’s Title Drought

Aryna Sabalenka’s fourth-round loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Canadian Open has left fans predicting an early US Open defeat for the Belarusian. Sabalenka was ousted by the 16th-seeded Alexandrova in three sets, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4. The defeat extended her title drought, which dates back to the Miami Open in March.

Sabalenka started the season strongly by winning titles at the Brisbane International, Indian Wells, and Miami. She also reached the final of the Australian Open and the semifinals of Wimbledon. However, she has not triumphed in any of her last six tournaments, including Toronto, which does not bode well for her title defense at the US Open.

Fans were quick to downplay her chances at Flushing Meadows.

Sabalenka won the US Open last year by defeating Amanda Anisimova in the final. It marked her second consecutive title at Flushing Meadows.

Aryna Sabalenka’s Promising Toronto Run Before Alexandrova Defeat

Aryna Sabalenka’s Toronto campaign got off to a promising start with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Moyuka Uchijima.

This was followed by a comfortable win against Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4, before Sabalenka met her match in Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round. The win helped Alexandrova level their head-to-head at 5-5.

Alexandrova will face Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals on Monday.
