Frances Tiafoe Shares Major Injury Update, Raises Concern Ahead of US Open After Undergoing a Procedure

Frances Tiafoe’s campaign at the Canadian Open came to a painful end this week when a right-hand injury forced the American to retire mid-match. Following the match, Tiafoe flew straight to New York to consult medical specialists, where doctors diagnozed him with a cyst in his hand that had been bothering him for some time. Now, Tiafoe has shared an optimistic update with his fans.

Frances Tiafoe Gives Positive Health Update After Undergoing Cyst Removal Surgery

Taking to social media, the 28-year-old revealed that he successfully underwent surgery on his right hand to remove a problematic cyst.

In an Instagram story, Tiafoe shared a pic of himself sitting in the back of a car, smiling with a thumbs-up while his right hand and wrist are wrapped in a post-surgery bandage.

“Big S/O to Dr. Michelle Carlson and the @hspecialsurgery team,” Tiafoe wrote. “They were able to diagnose and take out a cyst that has been causing some issues for some time now. Everything went well and I appreciate all of the messages and support. I’ll be back soon🙏🏾✌🏾.”

The operation was performed by Dr. Carlson, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports-related hand, wrist, and upper-extremity injuries, affiliated with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

While playing Arthur Rinderknech in the third round, the former World No. 10 appeared to be in pain from the beginning, losing the opening set 2-6. Trailing 0-2 in the second set, Tiafoe decided not to continue. Shortly afterward, the World No. 20 apologized to the Montreal crowd and revealed that he had been dealing with the issue for some time.

“Sorry to the fans out here in Montreal who came out to watch me tonight. I’ve been dealing with a right-hand injury for a little bit now. I tried to play but need the rest. Until next time, thanks for the love,” Tiafoe said.

In 2026, Tiafoe’s best result has been the title win at the ATP 500 event, Halle Open.

Tiafoe’s first-round win in Montréal has given him confidence ahead of the US Open, a tournament where he has reached the semifinals twice. His 2022 run was particularly memorable, as he defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round before falling to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set semifinal, while he also made the final four in 2024. The American hopes to go even further at this year’s US Open, which gets underway in New York on August 30.
