Alex Michelsen Fires Back at Heckler After DC Open Win – ‘I’m Allowed To Say Something’

Alex Michelsen has secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. His path to the final eight included a tough battle with Adrian Mannarino in the second round, which concluded with Michelsen emphatically firing back at a heckler after pulling off a stellar win.

Alex Michelsen Explains Why He Responded to the DC Open Heckler

After his Wimbledon campaign ended in a first-round loss to Jacob Fearnley, Michelsen kicked off his North American swing at the Hall of Fame Open. He reached the semifinals in Newport before clinching the Bloomfield Hills Challenger title, where he avenged his Wimbledon loss by beating Fearnley in the final.

Michelsen has carried that momentum into the DC Open, claiming a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match. The 21-year-old then locked horns with Adrian Mannarino in the second round.

Michelsen made a strong start to the contest by clinching the opening set and fending off the Frenchman’s efforts to win the second-set tiebreak, claiming a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory. After sealing his win, Michelsen turned to a spectator in the crowd and repeatedly directed a dig at him.

“Hey, I’m tougher than you! I’m tougher than you,” Michelsen said.

When the chair umpire asked about the exchange, the 21-year-old revealed that the fan had been heckling him throughout the match, and he felt compelled to respond.

“No, he was just chirping the whole match. It was good, but I’m allowed to say something back. So… No because I love it. It’s great. But when I’m allowed to say something. If I lost, I wouldn’t say anything,” he said.

Up next, Michelsen faces a tough challenge against No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the DC Open. Ahead of his campaign in Washington, D.C., the 21-year-old told Hard Court that practicing with Fritz benefited him more than it did the world No. 10, and he will be looking to draw on those valuable sessions when they meet.

“Fritz, it’s trickier, I think, for him because he’s better than me, and we practice together,” Michelsen said. “Usually, when you practice with someone and you play them in a match, it favors the one that is a little worse because you kind of know what’s coming a bit.”

Alex Michelsen will also take confidence from his 2-0 winning record against Taylor Fritz, including a 6-4, 7-6(6) win in their Indian Wells Masters clash earlier this year.
