Mubadala DC Open: American men struggling and bad weather are Day 2 headlines

The Mubadala DC Open is barely underway, and the American men are struggling. Newlywed Tommy Paul lost. His result was not surprising given the fact that tennis was a lower priority because of his recent wedding. Hometown hero Frances Tiafoe lost a tough singles match on Monday night and pulled out of doubles (with Nick Kyrgios) on Tuesday because of a wrist injury. Ben Shelton lost in doubles, and his singles match was halted due to rain.

Brandon Nakashima and Alex Michelsen join Taylor Fritz in the second round, but Marcos Giron, Learner Tien, and Mackenzie McDonald (who lost in the all-American matchup to Michelsen) are out of the tournament.

Zachary Svajda, who lost in qualifying, but got in as a lucky loser, lost his first round match on Monday and later admitted on social media that he has hand, foot, and mouth disease, a contagious viral illness.

Bad weather at Mubadala DC Open

With torrential rain falling on Tuesday night, it is unclear how far behind the tournament will be. Venus Williams is scheduled to play Anastasia Potapova in a night match. Alex de Minaur, the defending champion, is also supposed to begin his title defense on Tuesday evening against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

With both singles finals slated for Sunday, there is time to make up matches provided the weather improves.
