Taylor Fritz Responds to Andre Agassi Calling Him the ‘First Sociopath’ in Tennis

Taylor Fritz has earned a unique epithet from tennis legend Andre Agassi due to his ability to move past both success and failure with ease. Ahead of his campaign at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open, Fritz shared his thoughts on the eight-time Grand Slam champion’s assessment and opened up about the mindset behind his approach.

Following his quarterfinal exit at Wimbledon, Fritz is set to kick off his North American hardcourt swing at the ATP 500 event in Washington, D.C. The American fell short in the quarterfinals of the DC Open last year and will look to make a deeper run this time around.

During his pre-tournament press conference, Fritz was asked about Agassi’s description of him as “the first sociopath that’s ever played tennis,” a remark inspired by what Agassi called the world No. 10’s “impressive short-term memory loss” when it came to wins and losses.

Fritz embraced the unique assessment as a compliment, explaining his ability to brush past any circumstances that bothered him on the court.

“I’d say that’s a huge compliment coming from him. Yeah, I don’t really let things bother me, especially when I’m on the court. I try to stay very in the moment. Yeah, if something happens, something bad happens, I’ll get upset about it for a second, but then I’ll just move on,” Fritz said.

“I try not to just let things affect me when I’m on the court. Especially when I’m playing well, I feel like I’m very, you know, give it a second and then on to the next point,” he added.

Fritz further shed light on his mindset, detailing his efforts to ensure that his frustration during bad moments didn’t spill over into the next point.

“No, I mean, for me I think sometimes when something — I do something bad, I just kind of tell myself, like, that was really bad. I’ll get upset for a second. Sometimes it’s a misconception. People think when you get upset, that it can affect the next points. I just need to get it out of my system and be, like, that was awful, let’s move on,” he said.

Taylor Fritz will look to bank on his impressive mindset when he kicks off his DC Open campaign against Zizou Bergs. The American will enter the first-round clash with a slight edge, having claimed a 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 victory in their sole previous encounter at the Terra Wortmann Open in June.
