Paula Badosa Faces Criticism After First-Round Win at Hamburg Open

Badosa’s campaign at the Iași Open was marred by controversy, particularly during her semifinal win. During a tense moment in the match, she furiously hurled her racket toward the stands. The racket landed just short of the spectators, allowing her to avoid disqualification, but the incident sparked widespread criticism.

The Spaniard then faced Mayar Sherif in the final of the WTA 250 event on Monday, July 20. However, with Sherif leading 6-4, 4-0 and just two games away from the title, she retired from the match due to illness.

Badosa apologized for failing to complete the match during the trophy presentation, explaining that her body simply could not withstand the physical demands of the contest.

“I’m always a player that’s very honest and real. I have to say I hate this moment right now, I hate losing a final and I’m really sorry that I had to do it in this way but I couldn’t keep up with my body so I apologise for that also,” Badosa said.

Despite her struggles, the former world No. 2 traveled to Germany for the Hamburg Open, where she kicked off her campaign with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Katarzyna Kawa on Wednesday, July 22.

However, Badosa’s quick return left fans puzzled, with several questioning her ability to win her first-round match in Hamburg just two days after retiring from the Iași Open final.

“Badosa just won a match??? Didn’t she retire from a final 2 days ago like HUH???” a fan posted.

“Not hugely impressed with Badosa retiring two games from defeat in the Iasi final only to play and win her R1 match in a different tournament two days later. 🫤,” another fan wrote.

Addressing the speculation, sports commentator John Horn clarified that Badosa had retired due to stomach issues rather than injury, though he acknowledged that she might have been able to play out the final two games of the match.

“Lots of talk re Paula Badosa playing & winning match in Hamburg Wednesday after retiring from Final in Iasi on Monday… To be clear she wasn’t injured she had stomach issues…Should she have finished off the final 2 games of that Final yes maybe… #WTA,” Horn posted.

Meanwhile, other fans criticized what they perceived as a pattern of mid-match retirements and comebacks from the Spaniard.

“Badosa needs to face some consequences for this thing she keeps doing,” one fan commented.
