If it feels like the WTA players are dropping like flies out of the WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open draw, that’s because they are.
With qualifying set to begin on July 25, the tennis tournament is already down four highly ranked and well known players.

Who’s playing the Mubadala DC Open
Defending champion Leylah Fernandez will play with her sights set on going back-to-back.

She will play both singles and doubles.

Jessica Pegula, the 2019 champion, will be playing singles also.
Filipina star Alexandra Eala will play singles and doubles, her doubles partner will be Venus Williams. Venus is also scheduled to play singles and doubles.
Who’s not playing the Mubadala DC Open
The players who have withdrawn are: Marta Kostyuk, Victoria Mboko, Karolina Muchova, and Jasmine Paolini.
Paolini the most recent withdrawal. She planned to play singles and doubles, but the lingering foot injury she has dealt with most of the season is keeping her out of action. It is not clear if her doubles partner Sara Errani will play with a different partner, as she has done upon occasion this year. Most recently, Errani played the French Open, where she and Paolini were the defending champions, with Austria’s Lilli Tagger.
WTA schedule continues at a dizzying pace
The Mubadala DC Open kicks off the hardcourt season, running from July 27-August 2.
On August 2, the WTA 1000 National Bank Open begins. It is sometimes known as the Canadian Open, which the WTA is playing this year in Toronto. (It alternates between Toronto and Montreal, and the ATP plays concurrently in the other city.) That tournament concludes on August 13.
August 13 is the start of the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open which concludes on August 23.
The top ranked players will then head to New York to prepare for the US Open when main draw play begins on August 30. Others may elect to play a hardcourt event in Monterrey from August 23-29.
