Alexandra Eala has thoroughly impressed Andy Roddick with her stellar campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, having achieved a major milestone in her young career. Following Eala’s run to the fourth round of the grass-court Major, Roddick shared his thoughts on her immense popularity and dismissed critics who refuse to acknowledge her impact on women’s tennis.
Andy Roddick Praises Alexandra Eala’s Massive Impact After Wimbledon Run
No. 29 seed Eala kicked off her Wimbledon campaign with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Renata Zarazúa. She then defeated Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to set up a high-profile clash with defending champion and No. 3 seed Iga Świątek.
Over a year after she made her breakthrough by upsetting Świątek at the 2025 Miami Open, Eala notched another impressive victory over the Pole, triumphing 7-6(9), 6-2. The win ended Świątek’s title defense and saw the Filipina reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
However, Eala’s campaign came to an end in the fourth round, as Jasmine Paolini secured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in their closely contested battle to reach the quarterfinals of the grass-court Major.
Speaking on his “Served” podcast, Andy Roddick welcomed “Eala Mania,” describing it as a huge win for tennis that the 21-year-old’s campaign inspired massive watch parties at the Philsports Arena and other venues in the Philippines.
“Eala Mania is fun. I’m sorry. When you have watch parties, when you have watch parties in arenas around your country for a fourth round match, I’m in. Imagine like where you live, whatever the biggest venue is close to you, imagine having watch parties for a fourth-round match at Wimbledon and having no room. I am here for Eala Mania. It’s great for tennis,” Roddick said.
The former world No. 1 also bluntly dismissed Eala’s critics, saying, “I don’t want to hear any of that [expletive] like, ‘Oh, I don’t care. Stop talking.’ No, this is a movement. She is creating single-handedly a movement of a sect of tennis fandom that largely didn’t exist a couple of years ago.”
Roddick emphasized the need to appreciate the 21-year-old’s impact, crediting her for “single-handedly” bringing a new fanbase to the sport.
“It was a fun story when she broke out at Miami, right? We wanted more of it. She’s top 30, beating players at majors. It went from a fun story to a very real story and a phenomenon, and we should all grab it, embrace it, love it, shake it, be thankful for it. She is single-handedly bringing more fans into tennis in a very committed and passionate way,” he added.
Alexandra Eala received a hero’s welcome upon her return home after her Wimbledon campaign, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. presenting her with a presidential citation at Malacañang Palace in Manila. After enjoying a well-deserved break, Eala will return to action at the DC Open, which begins on July 27.
