Is Novak Djokovic the men’s tennis G.O.A.T., a villain — or both?

An upcoming documentary on the Serbian tennis star, from the director of Michael Jordan docuseries “The Last Dance,” attempts to answer that question.

“Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter,” chronicles Djokovic’s rise from war-torn Serbia to a winner of 24 Grand Slam titles, the most in men’s tennis history. Directed by Jason Hehir and released by Prime Video, the documentary features interviews with Djokovic and his family as well as tennis greats Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker and Jim Courier.

The Djokovic documentary will be released on Prime on Aug. 20, just in time for the 2026 U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 30 in New York.

In a trailer released July 14, Djokovic discusses the motivation to continue his record-setting career.

“People think you’ve achieved so many great things and now you should enjoy. I cannot enjoy,” he says in the trailer. “There are days when I’m doubting myself a lot. How long should I do this? Why am I putting myself and my family through this over and over again?”

Djokovic, 39, burst onto the scene at a time when men’s tennis singles was dominated by the rivalry between Nadal and Roger Federer. Together, the trio became known as “The Big Three.” Despite Djokovic’s undisputed success, he is seen as a divisive figure because of his emotional on-court outbursts and controversial opposition to the COVID-19 vaccination mandate.

The documentary examines Djokovic’s polarizing reputation.

“The number one doubter is here,” Djokovic says in the trailer, jabbing a finger into his chest. “And I’m trying to prove myself wrong more than anybody else.”

Djokovic is the latest tennis star to participate in a documentary about his life. Last month, Netflix released the Nadal documentary “Rafa.” In 2024, Federer was the subject of a documentary about the closing chapter of his career.

Serena Williams, who made her comeback to professional tennis in June after a four-year hiatus, has been the subject of multiple documentaries throughout her career, including post retirement in a 2024 ESPN and Disney+ docuseries.

Current men’s world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz was also featured in a Netflix docuseries released last year. Naomi Osaka, the world No. 13 who reached this year’s Wimbledon quarterfinals, was in two documentaries, one released in 2021 and another in 2025 that chronicled her career after giving birth to her daughter.
