Did Coco Gauff win her match today? What to know about Wimbledon final

There will be no third major title yet for Florida tennis sensation Coco Gauff after a hard-fought loss July 9 in the Wimbledon semifinal. The 22-year-old from Delray Beach fell to Karolina Muchova, coming just short in her first final in what’s historically been her worst grand slam event.

As she did in the Round of 16 against Belinda Bencic and the quarterfinal against Jessica Pegula, Gauff dropped the first set before coming back to win the second. She and her Czechian opponent traded serves all the way to the final tiebreak even as Muchova battled cramping in the London heat. Muchova gained the upper hand early in the 10-point tiebreak, then laid out for an incredible save to maintain her lead as Gauff mounted her comeback.

Gauff again stormed back to tie it at 6-6, and her mother, Candi Gauff, was seen by ESPN’s cameras pumping her fist after she tied it back up at 8-8. An error on the following point allowed Gauff to serve for the match, but she hit her drop shot into the net, her 35th unforced error on the day. Muchova followed with an expertly placed lob, then slipped at the net on her attempt to win it. The world No. 9 got a second chance, and Gauff was unable to keep up on a back-and-forth rally.

Muchova appeared to cry into her towel after winning the match, while Gauff received a standing ovation as she left the court. The Czechian will play in her second grand slam final after losing the 2023 French Open. She will take on either No. 12 Linda Noskova or No. 13 Marta Kostyuk, who will face off later in the day as both vie for their first major final appearance.

This was Gauff’s had been opportunity to add to her 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 French Open titles. No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 2 Elena Rybakina and defending champion Iga Swiatek went down earlier in the tournament, leaving Gauff as the highest seed remaining after she beat Pegula in the quarterfinal.

After bursting onto the tennis scene in 2019 by reaching the Round of 16 as a 15-year-old, Gauff had struggled in her attempts to advance farther on the sport’s biggest stage, losing in the first round two of the past three years.

When does Coco Gauff play next?

Coco Gauff will begin her warmup for the U.S. Open on Aug. 30.
