After an initial disappointing showing by the Brits at Wimbledon, which saw 15 players get knocked out in the first round and both Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu withdraw before the tournament even got underway, wildcard Arthur Fery is bidding for a semi-final place.

The 23-year-old, who is ranked 114 in the world, caused one of the shocks of the tournament on Monday, beating previous semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov in five sets on Centre Court.

Fery is appearing in the main draw for the fourth time, and his previous best performance was 12 months ago when he reached the second round after beating Alexei Popyrin in the first round.

So far this year he’s beaten Damir Dzumhur, Otto Virtanen, who beat the fourth seed Ben Shelton, Zizou Bergs and obviously Dimitrov. He will now face the number nine seed Flavio Cobolli.

Fery, who grew up in Wimbledon, is the first wildcard and first player outside the top 100 since Nick Kyrgios in 2014 to reach the Wimbledon last eight in the men’s singles.

Cobolli is the favourite with online bookmakers and will provide a very different proposition, and he’s already beaten the 19th and fifth seeds, Karen Khachanov and Alex de Minaur, last time out.

He needed just three sets to overcome De Minaur, and he is playing in his second successive quarter-final at SW19.

Twelve months ago, he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in four sets after winning the first one in a tie-break, but he reached the final of the French Open just over a month ago, losing to Alexander Zverev in five sets.

The Italian is going to be far tougher than the opponents Fery has already played so far, but with the crowd on his side, anything can happen.

The Brit also claimed the win the only time the two players have previously met, at the Australian Open back in January.

Fery came through qualifying and beat the 20th seed in three sets, winning 7-6, 6-4, 6-1, and it’s hard to see a repeat of that scoreline this time around.

You can get 5/2 on Fery to be the first Brit to reach the last four since Cameron Norrie in 2022, but online betting apps all have the Italian as the favourite at odds of 4/11. As such, I’m going for a Cobolli win in four sets.

Cobolli vs Fery tips: Fery to get off to a flying start

After the emotions and physical exertion of Monday night, it might be hard for Fery to keep going for another five sets and almost four hours, but he has been something of a comeback king.

He lost the opening set in his first two matches before winning in four and was two sets to one down against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the third round.

He was also two sets to one down against Dimitrov, but if he’s going to upset the odds on Wednesday, he will need to get off to a good start, and he’s already shown he’s more than comfortable in front of the big crowd.

Back him to get off to a good start by taking the first set.
