Tennis legend Chris Evert took a trip down memory lane after spotting her longtime friend and rival, Martina Navratilova, in Wimbledon’s royal box. The 18-time Grand Slam champion praised Navratilova’s unmatched legacy at the All England Club and reminded the tennis world of the accomplishments held by the Czech-American legend after Novak Djokovic’s latest milestone win brought him one step closer to beating Navratilova’s SW19 record.
On Saturday, Navratilova caught the action from a prestigious royal box at the All England Club. Alongside winning 18-Grand Slam titles herself, Navratilova won Wimbledon nine times.
Celebrating her career and her SW19 appearance, Evert listed the accolades of Navratilova:
“Won 9 Singles titles, 19 total in singles, doubles, mixed… so, yes, the undisputed Queen!
@Martina 👏👏👏💪👍.”
Evert’s post came after Novak Djokovic made history by winning his 106th match at Wimbledon by defeating Roman Safiullin 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 6-3, bringing Navratilova’s accomplishments into discussion. The Serb surpassed Roger Federer’s record of winning a total of 105 Wimbledon singles matches with the win.
However, the Serb is still behind Martina Navratilova’s 120 match wins at Wimbledon. During the post-match interview on court, a reporter reminded the Serb that he was still behind Martina Navratilova’s 120 match wins at Wimbledon and jokingly asked if he had another 15 wins left in him. Despite Djokovic reacting with amusement, some fans felt that the question was disrespectful to someone who just conquered something big.
As Djokovic heads to his 17th Wimbledon quarterfinal, it remains to be seen if the Serb can grab a 107th win and edge closer to breaking Navratilova’s SW19 record.
Chris Evert And Martina Navratilova’s Iconic Encounters
Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova’s historic rivalry goes way back and is widely considered one of the greatest in tennis. The two faced each other a staggering 80 times on the court and most notably squared off at the 1978 Wimbledon final, where Navratilova won her first SW19 title by defeating Evert 2–6, 6–4, 7–5.
Some of the most famous encounters between the two were during the 1980s, when they frequently clashed at the final stages of many Grand Slams. Notably, the two clashed back-to-back at the Australian Open finals in 1981 and 1982, when Navratilova beat Evert first. Evert, however, avenged that defeat the following year at the finals.
The two have, however, developed a close bond and frequently relish their prime days in television appearances. A documentary titled “Chris & Martina: The Final Set” premiered on Netflix on June 26, documenting the professional saga between the two legends.
