The first round of men’s doubles competition took place Wednesday at the 139th edition of the Wimbledon Championships in London, England.
Former Vol John-Patrick Smith competed with doubles partner Fernando Romboli on Court 4. The duo defeated Karol Drzewiecki and Kamil Majchrzak, 5-7, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (10-8).
In the first-round, Smith and Romboli totaled 11 aces and five double faults. The duo also recorded a 72 first serve percentage, 93 service points and 17 service games won.
Smith played at Tennessee from 2007-11, compiling a 152-44 singles and 146-38 doubles record. He became the second player in the history of college tennis to earn All-America honors four times in both singles and doubles, joining Rick Leach of USC (1984-87).
Smithâs highest ranking was No. 1 in singles and doubles competition. He earned SEC Player of the Year honors from 2010-11 and was named 2010 SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player. The former Vol was also the 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year and 2011 SEC Athlete of the Year.
