Serena Williams suffered a knee injury during her first-round loss at Wimbledon to Maya Joint, putting her tournament doubles debut with sister Venus in doubt, her agent said.
Williams, a wild card entry in both singles and doubles, returned to the court after four years since announcing her retirement. Before Wimbledon, she played in two doubles tournaments with partners Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova.
Williams suffered a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 defeat to the 20-year-old from Australia, in a match that lasted two hours and 22 minutes. She did not speak to the media after the match, with tournament officials saying she was “not able to undertake” her duties.
âSerena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams,â said Jill Smoller, Williamsâ agent. âShe left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week.â
Serena and Venus are six-time doubles champions at the All England Club, last winning the tournament in 2016, and are scheduled to play Solan Sierra and Camila Osorio in their first-round match.
When will Venus and Serena Williams play at Wimbledon?
The Williams sisters are scheduled to open doubles play at Wimbledon on Thursday, July 2. The full order of play for the day will be released the night of July 1.
