Iga Świątek was overwhelmed with emotion after surviving a scare against Taylor Townsend in her opening match at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. The Pole broke down in tears after the tense contest, which caught Andy Roddick’s attention and sparked surprise.
Why Andy Roddick Found Iga Świątek’s Emotional Reaction ‘Shocking’
No. 3 seed Świątek made a difficult start to her title defense at the grass-court Major. She looked in complete control as she dominated the first set, but the American fought back strongly in the second to level the match. Despite struggling with her serve, the world No. 3 regained her composure in the decider and claimed a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
The emotional toll of the hard-fought contest was evident as Świątek burst into tears after keeping her title defense alive.
Andy Roddick shared his thoughts on the scene during his “Served” podcast, highlighting the emotional intensity of the moment.
“Iga Świątek wins against Taylor Townsend. I don’t think that’s like a big story on its own, but there was some emotion after this match. Iga broke down afterward. Taylor walked off. Emotions were running high,” Roddick said.
The former world No. 1 argued that Świątek could never be accused of not caring enough on the court. If anything, he suggested, her flaw was often caring too much and allowing her emotions to get the better of her.
“You know what you’ll never ever be able to say about Iga Świątek is that she doesn’t care. If anything, it’s like she cares too much, right? You need to be able to level set every once in a while,” he said.
Roddick added that he found it both remarkable and “shocking” to see the 25-year-old display such raw emotion over one match despite everything she has accomplished in her career.
“It’s a pretty great thing, this far in, where she cares that much. She won six Grand Slams. She won this last year. She won 6-0, 6-0 in the final, and yet she still has that depth of emotion. It was shocking because she’s accomplished so much. She’s seen so much,” he added. “We view it as like, ‘Oh, you got another win.’ She views it as the most important thing ever, almost every time she goes out on the court.”
