There were several big upsets on Day 2 of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, as Ben Shelton, Elina Svitolina, and Donna VekiÄ were all eliminated as the thrilling first-round action continued. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams was also beaten on her return to the Wimbledon stage, bowing out in the first round against Maya Joint.

Menâs Singles
After four seeded players were sent packing on Day 1, the second day at the All England Club featured more dramatic upsets.
Shelton was stunned in the first round by Otto Virtanen, losing 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8), 2-6, 6-7 (9). This marked the fourth seedâs first exit in the first round of a Grand Slam since the 2023 French Open.
18th seed Francisco CerĂșndolo was beaten by Jaume Munar in straight sets, losing 1-6, 4-6, 3-6.
Ugo Humbert lost a thrilling clash against Zizou Bergs. The 27th seed came back from two sets down but couldnât complete the comeback, losing 2-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 3-6.
TomĂĄs MartĂn Etcheverry came up second best against Lorenzo Sonego. The 29th seed suffered a 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4) loss against the Italian.
30th seed Alejandro Tabilo was beaten by Kamil Majchrzak. The Chilean suffered a 3-6, 5-7, 5-7 defeat.
After a stunning run to the semifinals at the French Open, Matteo Arnaldi was beaten in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. The 32nd seed won the first set against Quentin Halys but suffered a 6-3, 1-6, 6-7 (5), 3-6 loss.
Womenâs Singles
Three seeded players were beaten on Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships in the womenâs singles draw. Svitolina headlined the list of shock exits, suffering a 5-7, 2-6 loss against compatriot Daria Snigur.
The eighth seed, a two-time semifinalist at Wimbledon, looked out of sorts as she crashed out in the first round at SW19 for the first time since 2018.
Clara Tauson went up against Maria Sakkari in a tricky first-round clash. The 24th seed suffered a 3-6, 3-6 defeat, marking her fourth Wimbledon exit in the first round.
Donna VekiÄ wasnât able to build on her impressive triumph at the HSBC Championships as she suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon. The 31st seed won the first set of her clash against Ashlyn Krueger but ended up losing 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6 in a close match.
With the first round in the books, the second round of the menâs and womenâs singles draw will begin on Wednesday. Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will headline the action on Day 3, with Novak Djokovic set to face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the pick of the matches.
