Former Tennessee women’s tennis player Esther Adeshina received a qualifying wildcard to the Championships at Wimbledon.
An England native, Adeshina earned her bid after a LTA playoff event, securing one of the final spots in the qualifying draw.
“It means a lot to me to be able to play in my first slam, especially at Wimbledon,” Adeshina said before defeating Moyuka Uchijima in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. “I think this milestone just shows how far I’ve come and all the work I have put in on and off the court. Not only my own, but my coaches and team around me.
“Tennessee women’s tennis has been an integral part of my development. There is no way I’d be here without that program and the coaches that supported me there.”
Adeshina lost her second qualifying match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Harmony Tan on Wednesday.
She played for the Lady Vols from 2020-24, compiling a 70-38 singles record an 89-54 doubles record.
