Singles titles awarded at rain-shortened Mitchell Tennis Classic

Jun. 22—MITCHELL — A weekend schedule filled with tennis was cut short due to weather, but the Mitchell Tennis Classic fit in the singles portion of the competition on Saturday.

Singles play was split into six divisions ranging from four to eight participants. The U.S. Open and French Open divisions featured eight-person brackets.

Lily Goeddel bested Katie Morgan 7-5, 6-3, for the U.S. Open division title, with Ava Prunty taking third place. Meanwhile, Cooper Star defeated Simon Wiese 6-3, 6-0, to win the French Open division, and Clay Bathke was third.

The remaining singles divisions were round-robin play.

Ellie Miskimins went 3-0 in the Laver Cup division to take first place, as Gabbie Thompson was second with a 2-1 record. In their head-to-head matchup, Miskimins edged out Thompson 7-5, 5-7, 12-10.

Cole Tingle also posted a 3-0 record to win the Miami Open division, with Jace Carlin in second place at 2-1. Tingle outlasted Carlin 5-7, 6-4, 15-13, in their head-to-head meeting.

Nora Hobbs went 3-0 to claim the title in the Paris Masters division, and Madison Schiefen went 2-1 to take second. Hobbs won the head-to-head match 6-1, 6-2.

Rounding out the singles play, Asher Kaus posted a 4-0 mark to finish atop the Cincinnati Open division, with Ryker Jarding in second place with a 3-1 record. Kaus slipped past Jarding 10-9 (5) in their head-to-head meeting.

One full round of mixed doubles action wrapped up before rain rolled in on Saturday evening. In the Indian Wells division, Elliot Smith and Cooper Star grabbed a 10-4 win over Ava Prunty and Liam Schiefen, while Katie Morgan and Simon Wiese defeated Sydney Bohle/Caleb Stoks 10-1.

In the Shanghai Masters division, Ellie Miskimins and Callum Cole clipped Zoey Zomer and Ryker Jarding 10-8, as Mallory Buenzow and Asher Kaus took down Gabbie Thompson and Kennet Cole 10-7.

The Mitchell Tennis Classic was scheduled to have four divisions and three rounds of play on Sunday, but poor weather forced the cancellation of the Day 2 events.
