With the first batch of wildcards now confirmed, the Wimbledon main draw is quickly coming into focus.
Serena Williams will play doubles at Wimbledon, partnering with her sister Venus after being awarded a wildcard entry.
Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Bublik have also been given a doubles wildcard. However, Kyrgios now faces an uncomfortable situation at the tournament.
Six of the eight men’s singles wildcards are already decided, leaving just two spots up for grabs and plenty of players in contention.
Kyrgios and Berrettini face uncertainty as Wimbledon wildcard race heats up
After making it all the way to the final in 2022, Nick Kyrgios will be keen to secure a Wimbledon wildcard, but he hasn’t received one yet.
He’s not the only big name hoping for a spot at SW19, either.
Matteo Berrettini, who played in the 2021 final at the All England Club, finds himself in a similar situation this year.
Wimbledon may have to decide between two players who both lost finals there to Novak Djokovic.
Gael Monfils is also reportedly in the mix for a wildcard. The Frenchman is playing his final season on tour before retiring from tennis.
And then there’s Dan Evans, who plans to retire after this year’s tournament. He was already frustrated by missing out on a Queen’s Club wildcard and will be even more upset if Wimbledon does the same.
Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka among Wimbledon wildcard selections
While there is a fierce battle for the two remaining wildcards, six players can rest easy in the knowledge that they will play at the tournament.
And that includes ATP icons Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka, who are the anomalies in a list dominated by English players.
The London Grand Slam has understandably favoured home players but has also made the superb decision to include Dimitrov and Wawrinka.
Dimitrov was leading Jannik Sinner in last year’s fourth round before an untimely injury forced him to retire. Meanwhile, Wawrinka is playing out his final season before hanging up his racket.
Joining them in receiving initial wildcards are Britons Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Fery, Jack Pinnington Jones and Toby Samuel.
