The tennis world still revolves around Serena Williams.
Williams, 44, confirmed her long-rumored return to professional tennis earlier on Monday by announcing her plan to play doubles with Victoria Mboko at the HSBC Championships at Londonâs Queenâs Club next week.
âQueenâs Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,â Williams said in a statement, per ESPN. âGrass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and Iâm excited to be back competing on one of the sportâs most iconic stages.â
On Friday, the Berlin Tennis Open announced that Williams will also play on its grass court from June 13 to June 21. Thatâs exciting in itself because it means Williamsâ iconic comeback wonât be limited to one tournament. But thereâs more.
âThe Berlin Tennis Open is part of Wimbledonâs strategic investments in the grass court season to create a world-class grass court swing that gives players the best possible preparation ahead of Wimbledon,â the official Wimbledon account posted on X.
Williams has won seven Wimbledon titles in singles, most recently in 2016. She finished runner-up in 2018 and 2019.
Williams is not confirmed to play at Wimbledon, in singles or doubles, but Andy Roddick thinks she should, assuming sheâd be granted her request for a wild card.
âI think you could say her best chance of, like, lightning in a bottle in this comeback is on grass at Wimbledon,â Roddick said on his âServedâ podcast last week.
Williamsâ last professional tennis matches came at the 2022 U.S. Open. She and her fellow all-time great sister Venus Williams lost in doubles in the Round of 64, and Williams bowed out of the singles draw at the hands of Ajla Tomljanovic in the Round of 32.
Williamsâ 23 Grand Slam singles titles are the most by any woman in the Open Era, and she and Venus also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together.
