With the Aryna Sabalenka loss, are we seeing a changing of the guard in women’s tennis?

Despite an upset-laden 2026 French Open, WTA World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka’s loss in the quarterfinals to Diana Shnaider is stil the most shocking.

Sabalenka has the dominant frontrunner in women’s tennis in recent years. She has three titles in seven tournaments played in 2026, winning at Brisbane, Indian Wells, and Miami. Her losses came at the Australian Open (Elena Rybakina), Madrid Open (Hailey Baptiste), Italian Open (Sorana Cirstea), and French Open (Shnaider).

While she still as a 900 point lead over Elena Rybakina in the WTA points race and a solid hold on the World No. 1 ranking, it is not as ironclad as it has been in recent years. Is a changing of the guard in the works?

The WTA rankings tend to be cyclical

Since 2018, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Iga Swiatek, and Sabalenka have had extensive stints as World No. 1.

With the exception of Barty who retired in her prime, each dominated for about two or three years before becoming vulnerable to her WTA peers.

Will the cycle continue and we see a new World No. 1 in the next 6-12 months?

She has plenty of points to defend with a 2025 Wimbledon semifinal finish and a 2025 US Open championship so it remains to be seen.

A Wimbledon win would heal the wounds

Sabalenka can flip the script with a Wimbledon win. She can enjoy the renaissance Iga Swiatek has last year after winning in London.

She just turned 28 and presumably has years ahead to heal some of the Grand Slam scars she is accumulating.

Sabalenka has improved and evolved her game since becoming World No. 1, but her WTA peers are catching up.
